Choosing replacement hardware that fits
Start with the door, not just the appearance
A replacement lock needs to fit the door preparation and work with the existing opening. Door thickness, backset, latch position, and the current hardware can matter. Photos of both sides of the door and the door edge help explain what is already installed.
Decide what you want to improve
Changing who has a key, replacing an unreliable mechanism, and updating the look of a door are different goals. Explain which matters most. Keeping compatible hardware and rekeying it may meet an access goal, while worn or unsuitable hardware may call for replacement.
Coordinate keys before buying locks
If several doors should share one key, ask about compatibility before purchasing separate lock sets. Existing cylinders and keyways can limit the available arrangement. Mention any hardware you have already bought, and confirm whether it is appropriate for the door and requested work.
