Planning your service
Planning a property key handover
Account for every exterior opening
Before a rekey request, make a list of the doors and locks involved. Include separate garage-entry or side-door locks when they are part of the property. Knowing the number of cylinders helps explain the work more clearly than counting only the keys you received.
Have an authorized contact available
Owners, tenants, and property managers may have different authority to approve lock changes. Confirm permission with the responsible property contact and arrange access to the doors being serviced. Have current keys available if you have them, and explain any locks for which keys are missing.
Check condition during the access change
A turnover is also a useful time to describe loose, damaged, or unreliable locks. Rekeying changes key access; it does not make unsuitable hardware secure or correct every door problem. Discuss any sticking latch or damaged component alongside the keying plan.
